Dental Implants in Streamwood and Hoffman Estates, IL
Are you looking for a permanent solution to replace missing, broken, chipped, crooked, or misaligned teeth? While most people typically think of bridges or dentures to replace missing teeth, many of our patients at Streamwood Family Dentistry have discovered the benefits offered by dental implants. You won’t ever have to worry about dental implants slipping or sliding while you’re speaking or chewing, and they also don’t require any special maintenance beyond your normal daily brushing and flossing. Unlike fixed bridges, they also don’t require extensive preparation (i.e. grinding of your healthy, natural teeth) in order to accommodate them.
Dental Implants 101: What Should You Know
The first thing you should be aware of is that the procedure for dental implants may take several months to complete. During your initial consultation, we’ll thoroughly examine your teeth and gums and take digital x-rays to assess your jawbone condition. Your gums must be in good health prior to moving forward. This is important because dental implants need sufficient jawbone support for the titanium posts they require. Once the titanium posts have been surgically inserted into your jawbone, your mouth will require time to heal (as long as 4-6 months). During this healing period, your jawbone will actually fuse around the dental implant during a process called osseointegration.
Once your mouth has healed, you’ll need to come back and have a temporary crown placed over your implant. Once a permanent crown has been custom-fabricated for you, we’ll then securely place it over your implant before checking your final fit and appearance. With proper care, dental implants should last up to 25 years or more. Compare this to 5-15 years on average for many of the dental restoration alternatives and you’ll see why dental implants make a good investment.
Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
Restoring missing teeth is more than just a cosmetic concern. Missing teeth put more stress on your remaining teeth, which can cause fractures or additional tooth loss, not to mention periodontal disease from additional bacteria lurking in the gaps between your teeth. While dental implants offer many distinct advantages over other dental restorations, they aren’t recommended for every patient, especially those with existing medical conditions or those with insufficient jawbone structure.
To determine your eligibility for dental implants, Streamwood Family Dentistry would be more than happy to provide a consultation and thorough examination. Please contact us today to schedule an appointment with our dentist and discover your many available dental restoration options.
