Helpful Tips for Many Common Dental Emergencies

Knowing what to do in an emergency dental situation can increase your chances for successful treatment. The main thing to remember is to try to keep calm while determining if you require immediate dental care. Here are some helpful tips for dealing with many common dental emergencies:

  • Knocked-Out Tooth – Call us immediately – you have the highest chance of restoring the tooth if it’s returned to its socket within an hour of being knocked out. You may rinse your tooth with water but don’t scrub it. You may store it in a glass of saline (sterile water) or milk during transport. In addition to the knocked-out tooth, you could have nerve damage or a jaw fracture.
  • Broken Filling or Lost Crown – This happens more than you would expect – call us immediately to schedule an appointment. Try to keep the affected area as clean as possible by rinsing it. If it’s easily located, bring your crown with you to the appointment so that we can evaluate it and determine whether or not it can be placed back onto your tooth.
  • A Severe Toothache – A toothache can be caused by a variety of issues ranging from minor to serious. Try taking over-the-counter pain medication and be sure to clean the affected area with warm water and dental floss to ensure that lodged food or debris isn’t the culprit for your pain. If the pain persists, call us immediately for an appointment. You could have an abscess, infection, or another serious dental issue that needs to be addressed.
